about

"Throughout "Sleeping Spirals", the debut album from Hannah James Toby Kuhn, distinct threads of travel, place and self-discovery come together to form a complex but unified whole. It is a journey you will want to take again and again." - Folk Radio UK

This album is a journey.
A journey outside, as our lives take us here and there, playing and listening, with friends and alone.
A journey inside, as we continue to discover ourselves through our feelings, our thoughts and our imagination.
A journey together, as our dialogue takes shape, twists and turns, spinning tunes and weaving songs, spiralling out to the world on a stage or in towards a common story that we are here to tell.

Our story is told through those that are told to us, Ragged Woman through a book, Giant from a friend, Three Ravens and In the Gloaming from the folk traditions. It is told on the keys of Hannah's accordion in January and February, and on the strings of Toby's cello in Under Sea and Vine dance. It tells of pain and hardship in Jealousy and Too far for you to see. It is told on the road in Faint and Weary Traveller. It is told to us standing still, if we but listen, in The Lake.

This album is tied to the natural world which surrounds us, inspiring and expiring, sleeping the winter through to better meet the spring. It is rooted in our deepest fears and the warmth of their dark intimacy, yet branches out in the fresh light of our hopes to embrace the joy of musicmaking, together dancing along the spiral path towards a future we will soon meet.
